An autopsy is scheduled Monday as police work to identify a woman whose torso was discovered in a Kitchener, Ont. dumpster over the weekend.
The dismembered body part was found late Saturday morning inside a garbage bin behind an apartment building in the city’s north end.
Waterloo Regional Police released a statement about the discovery on Sunday, indicating that the torso was found in a black, short-sleeved T-shirt with the words "Forget Princess I want to be a Vampire" printed on the front.
According to police the body is believed to be that of a Caucasian woman.
The age of the victim has not been determined and police say no other body parts have been discovered in the area.
The investigation is being conducted by Waterloo Regional Police’s Homicide Branch in partnership with the Coroner’s Office.
The area surrounding the building and dumpster remained taped off Sunday as police continued their investigation.
Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Kevin Thaler said Sunday investigators are looking at previous missing persons cases in Waterloo and in other jurisdictions.
“There’s a family involved in this. The focus right now is on identifying who this person is and finding out who did this,” Thaler said.
Police canvassed the neighbourhood taking statements from nearby residents.
Police would not say how long the torso had been in the dumpster, but the Region of Waterloo website indicated garbage pickup would have been on Friday, a day before the torso was discovered.
People who live in the neighbourhood said they are shocked and disturbed by the grisly discovery.
“How am I going to close my eyes at night knowing that this happened across the street from me,” said one resident.
A resident of the apartment building, Matt Deoniziak, said at least 50 per cent of the people in the building are retired and older.
“It’s a quiet building,” he said.
The autopsy is to take place at a Hamilton, Ont. hospital.
