Canada is urging travellers to France to avoid demonstrations as French authorities impose curfews to deal with violent protests and rioting. On Monday, Global Affairs Canada updated its travel advice for France amid nationwide demonstrations, which began in September with students protesting school conditions. Those protests have since swelled into a broader movement targeting issues like the rising cost of living. With some demonstrations leading to vandalism, looting, arson and violent clashes with police, French authorities have responded with tear gas, water cannons and localized curfews. Global Affairs Canada is now urging travellers to France to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and to follow local curfew orders, which are currently in place in parts of Paris such as the Place de la République square and around the Les Halles food market. Other restrictions on gatherings, such as curfews for minors, are also in effect in cities like Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Lille. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu credited the “targeted curfews” with helping maintain calm overnight into Tuesday, and warned that local authorities are considering whether to impose similar measures for a further night. “Check with local authorities to determine whether you are in an area subject to a curfew,” Global Affairs Canada advises. “Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time.” Canada is also advising travellers to France to monitor local media for the latest information and follow the instructions of local authorities. “Be prepared to adjust your travel plans in the event of disruptions,” Global Affairs Canada says. “Expect heightened security measures and an increased police presence.” Canada has long advised travellers to France to “exercise a high degree of caution” due to the potential threat of terrorism. More than 2,000 people were arrested this past weekend, with at least two deaths and reports of serious injuries, including two people who lost their hands. With files from CNN
