General Motors is recalling 126 Chevrolet and GMC trucks in Canada because defective side curtain airbag inflators could deploy without a crash, potentially sending metal fragments toward occupants. An updated Transport Canada recall says the issue affects certain 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, Silverado HD, GMC Sierra and Sierra HD trucks. The defect could cause the driver or passenger-side curtain airbags to deploy unexpectedly. If an inflator ruptures, its components could be propelled into the vehicle, creating a risk of injury. GM will notify affected owners by mail and instruct them to take their trucks to a dealership to have both side curtain airbag modules replaced. The latest campaign follows a similar recall issued in May which covered 357 trucks from the 2018 and 2019 model years and was identified as an expansion of an earlier recall in March. Both involved potentially defective side curtain airbag inflators that could deploy without a crash. General Motors also issued an airbag-related recall in the United States in September. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified 1,559 potentially affected vehicles, including certain 2016 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty trucks, as well as 2016-2017 Silverado and Sierra 1500 models. Owners can check whether their vehicles are affected by entering their vehicle identification (VIN) number. Customers south of the border can use the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s VIN recall lookup tool.
