This year, academics and scientists in the U.S. have been on shaky ground as the Trump administration cut billions of dollars in U.S. federal funding to scientific research.

Now, Canada is trying to capitalize on that shifting environment, with federal funding allotted for leading global researchers, along with immigration reform to make the transition easier.

In total, Ottawa’s invested $1.7 billion towards recruitment efforts to attract top international research talent, who have traditionally chosen the U.S. for its abundance of funding.

On Tuesday, Industry Minister Melanie Joly confirmed to reporters that the federal government was serious about attracting top talent.

“Certain countries are turning their backs on academic freedom and cutting research and weakening science,” she said at a press briefing in Montreal. “We are not doing that.”
