Canada’s employment rate rose to 6.5 per cent in September with a net total of 68,000 jobs shed, Statistics Canada reported on Friday. The largest job losses were felt in the public sector, particularly in health care, social assistance and education. Canada has lost a net 41,000 jobs so far this year, compared with a gain of 211,300 in the same period of 2025. Among Canadians aged 55 and older, the unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 5.3 per cent, as more people in the age group looked for work. A report released earlier this year also found that Canadian seniors are staying longer in the workforce. A Statistics Canada report released in April found that 15.2 per cent of Canadians, aged 65 and older, were either employed or looking for work, the highest participation rate recorded since the agency began recording the data in 1976.
