FORT ALEXANDER, Man. - Two girls aged 16 and 17 have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 19-year-old woman on the Sagkeeng First Nation.
Friends and members of the community have identified the victim as Serena McKay of Powerview, Man., and say a video of an attack on her has been circulating on social media.
RCMP have not confirmed the victim's identity but say a 19-year-old from Powerview was last seen on Saturday and was reported missing the next day.
Mounties say later that day they got a call that a body had been found near a residence in Fort Alexander, Man.
RCMP say investigators are still on the scene, including the major crimes unit and forensic identification services.
A candlelight vigil for McKay will be held Thursday on the First Nation.
"Everyone is welcome to attend," says the event page on Facebook. "Gathering together to acknowledge a life lost too soon to violence."
One of the organizers of the vigil, Cheyenne Destiny, is calling for people to attend with a healing attitude.
"The drums should be beat loud and the song should be sung loud ... in her honour. So many people are affected by this, let's come together and heal," she says.
"Stop hating! Yes, what these young kids did was horrible but justice will be served. It affects everyone and we need to stop the negativity."
Destiny also put out a plea for people to stop circulating the video of the attack.
"Have respect for her family and friends," she says. "That shouldn't be seen."
