Two Ottawa men have been arrested and charged with a number of terrorism offences, the RCMP announced Friday night.
In a news release, police said the men were arrested Friday following a “national security criminal investigation.”
One of the men was arrested at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, allegedly “as he was intending to travel overseas for terrorist purposes,” police said.
Carlos Larmond, 24, was subsequently charged with attempting to leave Canada to participate in terrorist activity abroad, and with participating in the activity of a terrorist group.
Ashton Carleton Larmond, also 24, has been charged with facilitating terrorist activity, participation in the activity of a terrorist group and instructing to carry out activity for a terrorist group. He was arrested in Ottawa, police said.
RCMP did not say if the accused are related.
“Through collaborative efforts with our partners, we were able to prevent these individuals from leaving Canada to engage in terrorist activity overseas,” RCMP assistant commissioner James Malizia said in the statement.
“We encourage citizens to remain vigilant and to report any information on terrorism or related suspicious activities to the National Security Information Network at 1-800-420-5805 or by contacting the police in their community.”
