EDMONTON - The Ontario-born director of "Avatar" and "Titanic" is going to Alberta to judge the province's oilsands for himself.

James Cameron has written a letter to Premier Ed Stelmach to say he'll be arriving for a three-day trip starting September 27th.

Cameron says he wants to learn as much as possible from industry executives, government officials and impacted communities.

In addition to touring an oilsands facility, Cameron says he plans to fly north to Fort Chipewyan to meet with community leaders.

He's asking to meet with Stelmach on September 29th.

A spokesman for Stelmach says the premier is pretty busy around that time but "would intend to sit down with Mr. Cameron for a while."

Stelmach invited Cameron to the province after the director blasted the oilsands at a United Nations forum earlier this year.

He called the oilsands a "black eye" on Canada's image as an environmental leader.
