Former Edmonton mayor and federal minister of natural resources Amarjeet Sohi has been hired at a public affairs firm. New West Public Affairs announced his hiring as a senior advisor on Thursday, lauding his experience in government. “Public service has always been about bringing people together to solve problems,” Sohi said in a press release. “I’m excited to join New West and continue that work by helping organizations understand government, build relationships, and move good ideas forward.” Sohi joined Edmonton city council in 2007, then successfully ran as a Member of Parliament in 2015. While in Ottawa, he oversaw the infrastructure and communities and natural resources portfolios. He lost his seat in 2019. Two years later, he was elected as Edmonton’s mayor. He did not seek re-election in 2025 after running and failing to win the federal Edmonton Southeast seat for the Liberal Party of Canada. New West Public Affairs, although headquartered in Calgary, operates in the Prairies and Ontario. Cartmell hired at NAIT Former city councillor and mayor candidate Tim Cartmell also announced his new position this week. The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) hired Cartmell, an engineer turned city councillor, as the associate vice president of major capital projects. Cartmell will be leading the polytechnic’s development of an advanced skills centre, a 58,064-square metre training facility on NAIT’s main campus that will enable the school to train 5,500 more students in trades each year. Cartmell served two terms as city councillor from 2017 to 2025, when he ran for the mayor seat.
