Woman charged in Rosedale active shooter situation; deceased suspect identified

A woman is charged after last week's active shooter incident and we're learning more about the man who died after shooting at police.

The woman who surrendered during last week’s active shooter situation has been charged with break-and-enter.

On Aug. 28, police were tracking a wanted individual.

CTV News has learned the man police were after is 31-year-old Elvis Vukaj.

Vukaj is a former MMA fighter with an extensive criminal history.

Investigation brought police to Crescent Road in the northwest Calgary community of Rosedale.

“Police were attempting to apprehend a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large after he removed a court-ordered electronic monitoring device,” police said on Wednesday.

“Due to the man’s history of violence, multiple police resources had been attempting to safely arrest him.”

According to police, the man was with a woman, and they refused to give themselves up.

Police said he “fired several shots into a residence in an attempt to gain access” and, when that didn’t work, “broke into a second nearby residence.”

Police said he “fired several shots at officers from the residence.”

Residents along Crescent Road were advised by police to shelter in place while the incident unfolded.

The incident lasted from shortly after 3:30 p.m. to shortly after 7 p.m.

It was resolved when the woman surrendered and was taken into custody and Vukaj was found dead inside the home.

He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Wednesday, police said Monica Gonzalez, a 32-year-old Calgary woman, is charged with break-and-enter in connection with the incident.

She’s set to appear in court on Oct. 8.

Police said “no other injuries were reported” during this incident, but that it was a very dangerous situation.

“Individuals with violent histories and ties to organized crime pose serious risks to public safety, and this incident highlights how volatile situations can become,” said Staff Sgt. Ben Lawson with the Calgary Police Service’s organized crime unit.

“These suspects are often determined to avoid capture, which can lead to unpredictable and dangerous situations.

“In high-risk arrests, like this one, investigators work closely with our operational resources to prioritize community safety and ensure we have the resources in place should an incident escalate.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), which is the province’s police watchdog, was contacted.

ASIRT has since deemed the incident outside its scope.

Court records show Vukaj was awaiting two criminal trials at the time of his death.

The first trial, scheduled for November of this year in Calgary, was on an allegation of extortion.

The second was scheduled for June 2026 in Calgary on multiple allegations, including robbery, housebreaking with intent and weapons offences.

Vukaj had warrants out for his arrest on allegations of failing to comply with release orders and mischief/damage under $5,000.
