A downtown Calgary college campus is now home to an on-site thrift store meant to help some students while giving others hands-on work experience. The endeavour is a collaboration between the Women In Need Society (WINS) and Bow Valley College. In a Thursday news release, Bow Valley College said it’s “designed to serve students and staff while advancing social good and functioning both as a community resource and a living classroom.” Through the store, WINS will provide “free emergency clothing and essential items to students in need.” It aims to let students “focus on their education with confidence and dignity.” Thursday’s release also said eligible students “will also have access to WINS’ House to Home program.” Meanwhile, Chiu School of Business students from multiple areas “will engage directly with WINS’ operations.” Karen Ramchuk, WINS president and CEO, said the model “demonstrates in a real and visible way how business can create social impact.” Lynn Connell, Bow Valley College student experience and digital transformation vice-president, said it “gives purpose to (students’) learning while providing meaningful experience they can carry forward into their careers.” Bart Chudleigh, Chiu School of Business dean, said it “gives students the opportunity to engage with these ideas in a tangible way.”
