We’ve got one more day of sunny, warm above seasonal conditions for Calgary on Thursday. Temperatures throughout southern Alberta will reach the high teens into the low 20s, with Calgary slated to reach 18 C this afternoon and a mainly sunny sky. A great last chance to rake those leaves and get the yard decorated for Halloween before the cold weather arrives. Conditions will start to turn as early as Friday morning, with the potential for a rain/snow mix to begin falling over the city at around 4:30 am. This will make the morning commute a potentially messy one, so best to prepare accordingly and give yourself extra travel time. With all the warmth we have recently experienced, it’s likely any snow will melt on contact with the ground, but with temperatures hovering around zero the precipitation could refreeze on surfaces. Wind will also be a possible hazard on Friday, with northerly winds blowing in at 40-70 km/h. Completing this winter weather trifecta are the temperatures, which will fall after today with a high on Friday for Calgary of just 5 C if we’re lucky! Saturday and Sunday will also be cool, gloomy and damp, though the winds will be calmer as the low-pressure system delivering this wintery mix tracks into northern Saskatchewan. No watches or warnings have been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada at this point, but we are keeping a keen eye on this system and will update accordingly. A peak at the long-range forecast has models agreeing more seasonal conditions returning to Calgary by early next week, though temperatures remain on the cooler side.
