The Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo has officially opened its new Asian Highlands habitat to members of the public. The new area marks the first phase of the zoo’s redevelopment of Imagine Asia, formerly Exploration Asia. The zoo says the Asian Highland area is inspired by the Eastern Himalayas, and is home to snow leopards, red pandas and Sichuan takin. The snow leopards are visible through two interconnected habitats called the Kingdon Snow Leopard Ridge, while the Sichuan takin can be seen exploring the Nicholls Family Himalayan Slopes. The red pandas, meanwhile, can be seen moving through expanded climbing spaces and across overhead logs. Kyle Burks, president and CEO of the Wilder Institute, says the opening of Asian Highalnds is an important milestone for the zoo. “As the first phase of a broader journey to reimagine our connection to Asia’s wildlife and landscapes, it brings together exceptional animal care, conservation storytelling and meaningful opportunities for guests to learn and engage.” Asian Highlands opened to zoo members at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, and the public at 12:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets to the zoo, you can visit CalgaryZoo.com.
