A historic hockey season began Thursday night at the Saddledome in Calgary. It will be the Flames’ final home opener there before they move to Scotia Place. At the Flames’ practice in the morning, thousands of red t-shirts were draped over the seats. The shirts marked the Flames’ final season in the Saddledome, their home arena since 1983. Throughout the season, the Flames plan to highlight special moments in Saddledome history. “There’s going to be great energy all season long in this building, and we know that and we’re going to play accordingly,” said Ryan Huska, Flames head coach. “For me, it’s going to be special. Home openers—not that many left,” said Mikael Backlund, Flames captain. “Even though I’d love to play forever, it’s going to come to an end eventually.” The puck dropped between the Flames and the Seattle Kraken at 7 p.m. Walking into the Saddledome for the game, fans expressed what the Saddledome’s final season means to them. “I’ve been a fan ever since I was five years old. (The Saddledome is) definitely iconic. This is what everyone knows in Calgary,” said one. “I’m definitely going to miss this place,” said another. “Coming to the Saddledome ever since I was little, it’s going to be sad to see it go, but I’m looking forward to the new arena.”
