Cavalry FC continued to win at ATCO Field on Saturday, defeating Ottawa Atletico 3-1 on the strength of two goals from Tobias Warschewski. The victory was Cavalry’s fourth in its past five games and third in a row over Atletico Ottawa, after losing the CPL Championship game in an Ottawa snowstorm last fall. Cavalry have gone unbeaten 17 games in a row at ATCO Field. Saturday, the club came out flying, getting a goal in the 13th minute from Nathaniel Edwards, followed five minutes later by another from Warschewski to propel Cavalry to a 2-0 lead. Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau found the top of the Cavalry net in the 22nd minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. Cavalry fired 16 shots in the first half alone, with seven hitting the target, but heading into the second half, it remained a one-goal match. Eight minutes into the second half, Warschewski converted a cross from Ali Musse to make it 3-1. The goal was his eighth of the season, tied for most in the CPL. Warschewski also leads with seven assists. Warschewski almost had a third goal as time ran down, but Atletico Ottawa goalkeeper Chris Kalongo turned it away. With the three points, Cavalry increased its margin over third-place Atletico FC to 10 points. “These lads like a challenge so I think there was a challenge there,” said Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. in a post-game press conference. “If we want to lift trophies this year, we’ve got to beat the teams around us and I think that’s what we showed today,” Wheeldon added. “They (Atletico Ottawa) didn’t quit. They’ll have a say in where this league title goes” The two clubs meet one more time in the regular season, Sept. 30 in Ottawa. Next up for Cavalry FC at home is an Aug.29 clash against Vancouver FC. It will be its first ever SpongeBob SquarePants Match. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
