Thousands of volunteers will work to rid river pathways of garbage and debris this weekend during the City of Calgary’s annual cleanup. The Pathway and River Cleanup is a yearly event that sees hundreds of citizens gather to pick up litter from 300 kilometres of pathways. The initiative started back in 1967, and officials say many of the same volunteers return year after year to help clean. “The commitment we see from volunteers helps keep our parks and pathways welcoming, while reinforcing the importance of protecting these spaces long after the cleanup is finished,” said Kyle Ripley, the city’s director of parks and open spaces, in a news release. “This weekend is about more than picking up litter; it’s about caring for the places we all share and enjoy every day.” The 2026 Pathway and River Cleanup will be held Friday to Sunday.
