To the east of Lethbridge, residents in Taber are celebrating a major milestone at this year’s Cornfest. The southern Alberta staple event turns 40 this year. Following a parade on Thursday night, the grounds—including the Wildrose Midway—were opened to all. Other events include the Bull-a-rama, BMX show, corn-eating contest and more. Cornfest is “Taber’s biggest festival” and is also said to be the largest free family fair in Western Canada. According to VisitTaber.com, “Cornfest is a celebration of community, agriculture, and summer fun, drawing thousands of visitors each year to experience everything that makes Taber special.” Organizers say the event is truly for the community. “I remember going to Cornfest since I was a little kid and in middle school, elementary school—stuff like that. And it’s just kind of been a staple of the area for as long as I can remember,” said Matthew Peleskey, Cornfest co-chair. “So, it’s great to be able to really help and give back a bit to that, (and) especially for a 40th anniversary.” Cornfest runs until Saturday at Confederation Park in Taber.
