The 2026 FIM World Supercross Championship opened its season in Calgary Saturday. McMahon Stadium was reconfigured from a football field to a racetrack. Building the track involved laying down lawn fabric and plywood before trucking in a lot of dirt. It took between 24 and 48 hours to complete the rebuild. Racers said they were excited to try it out while the event itself pumped millions of dollars into Calgary’s economy. “(It’s kind of) a race that we know to be really sticky and a lot of clay is in St. Louis, Missouri, and that’s like a big polar opposite of this,“ said Justin Hill, from Rick Ware Racing. ”This you just have a lot of your wheels spinning a lot. You’re not really making a lot of traction.” GSM Yamaha team member Cole Thompson said new tracks took some getting used to. “The track’s very loose,” Thompson said. “Some of the best top soil you’ll find, but for dirt bikes, it gets torn up pretty quick. They’ve been able to work on it, make it better and better. So I think it’ll be good racing. ” Saturday night, Cooper Webb was declared the winner when a thunderstorm midway through the final race ended things a little bit early. Before that, Webb posted video of the McMahon Stadium circuit on his social media page to give viewers an opportunity to experience the track from the competitors’ perspective. Plans are in the works to bring another Supercross event to Calgary.
