Storms knock out power in many Alberta communities

City crews were sent to deal with this downed power line in Calgary early Thursday morning.

While a state of emergency remains in Canmore, Calgary and other areas of the province had to deal with their own issues during Wednesday night’s rain storm.

Several trees were toppled and power lines were knocked down during the storm.

ENMAX worked through the night to restore power in the affected areas of the city and they say that there are just a handful of homes without power at this time.

Drivers are reminded to treat intersections where the lights are either out, or on 'red flash', to treat those as four-way stops.

The worst weather, however, came in the southernmost parts of the province.

As much as 50 mm of rain soaked Lethbridge and there were many reports of funnel clouds, but nothing touched down anywhere.

Hail, which was at times the size of a loonie, also pounded the area.

The province issued a high streamflow advisory on Wednesday at 12:45 for the Upper Bow, Elbow, and Highwood River.

There is no indication on when that would be lifted.

People are asked to stay off the banks and keep away from rivers and streams because of the fast moving water.

The Calgary Fire Department also has a boating advisory in effect, saying that the banks are unstable and there is debris in the water.

Heavy rains are expected to ease sometime later today and rivers are likely to crest once the rain has stopped.
