Sleeping man rescued from construction site after being partially buried in half-ton of soil

A man who was partially buried in soil on a southeast construction site was transported to hospital as a precaution Friday.

A man was partially buried on a construction site in the deep southeast Friday afternoon. Luckily he’s OK.

A Calgary Fire Department (CFD) spokesperson said that around 12:45 p.m., a man who was not a worker wandered into a construction site at 52 Street and 202 Ave. S.E. and laid down for a snooze.

Construction workers returned from lunch didn’t notice the man, and dumped a load of soil, and partially buried him -- although his torso remained exposed the whole time.

The CFD rescue team was called in and treated the incident like a trench collapse, and extricated the buried man.

It took about 30 minutes to get him out.

He was transported to Foothills Hospital as a precaution, but EMS said he’s in non-life-threatening condition.

CFD estimated that a half a yard of soil was dumped on the man, which, according to Google, can weigh more than 1,000 pounds.
