Preparations for the upcoming G7 summit will mean a significant increase in the number of military aircraft in the sky in Kananaskis beginning this month. The exercises will include CF-18 Hornet fighter jets, CH-147F Chinook helicopters and CH-146 Griffon helicopters. The RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) says activity will increase in early May and continue all the way through to mid-June, when the summit concludes. “The public can expect to see and hear Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft flying in and around the region, sometimes at lower altitudes and in formations of multiple aircraft, as air crews practice procedures and familiarize themselves with operating in the region,” the ISSG said in a statement Thursday. The Canadian Armed Forces will be supporting the ISSG throughout the event, including providing military personnel and equipment to ensure the safety of summit participants, local communities and visitors. The RCMP’s other partners include the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Sheriffs Branch and Alberta Conservation Officers.
