Calgary RBC locations closed for ‘safety incident’

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) customers in Calgary and area were met by signs and locked doors when they arrived at their banks on Thursday.

An official with RBC confirmed to CTV News on Friday morning that several locations in Calgary and area were closed but refrained from sharing any further details about what happened.

Customers in Calgary, Airdrie and as far away as High River reported the issue on social media.

They said the bank told them it would be closing early due to security reasons.

“The safety of our team and clients is our top priority,” said Shela Shapiro, RBC’s regional director of communications, in a statement Friday.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we closed our Calgary branches yesterday afternoon after we learned of a safety concern that was later resolved.”

Shapiro said all branches would be open with regular hours on Friday.

The Calgary Police Service said it was notified by RBC staff at about 2:40 p.m. on Thursday about a man uttering threats.

“Due to the nature of the threat, RBC corporate security took the action of closing all RBC locations in Calgary,” CPS said in a statement Friday.

Following an investigation, police located and arrested the suspect.

Charges are pending.
