Prominent real estate developer and philanthropist Jack Singer dies

A one-of-a-kind Calgarian passes away

Prominent Calgarian and philanthropist Jack Singer passed away early Saturday morning at the age of 95.

Singer was a successful real estate developer accumulating  more than a million square feet of  downtown office space and thousands of apartments across Canada, Arizona, Texas and California.

Singer often used his real estate earnings for good, bringing thousands of Polish Jews to Canada before and after the Holocaust.

Singer was also a long time supporter of the arts.  In 1982, his two sons Stephen and Alan honoured their father with a donation to the now-famous Jack Singer concert hall.

Singer also became famous in Hollywood, battling “The Godfather” director Francis Ford Coppola for control of Coppola’s studio.  Singer eventually bought the studio, renaming it Hollywood Center Studios.

Funeral services for Jack Singer will be held on Tuesday, February 5^th, 2013 at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, 1325 Glenmore Trail S.W. at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts.
