Calgary police have announced a third intersection that will see automated speed enforcement tickets issued. Alberta revealed back in December 2024 it would be doing away with photo radar on provincial highways and connectors – restricting it to use in school zones, playground zones and construction zones – and ending the use of “speed-on-green” cameras. The restrictions came into effect on April 1. Local law enforcement agencies have been permitted to request provincial permission to reinstate the use of photo radar at high-risk areas that see serious-injury or fatal collisions. On Friday, the Calgary Police Service released information on two intersections that had been approved, saying both red-light and speed enforcement would resume at the following spots on Oct 3: On Tuesday, CPS announced another area that would see photo radar return: It will have red-light and speed enforcement as of Oct. 6. On Aug. 25, a 20-year-old man was killed in the intersection after crashing his motorcycle into an SUV. Police said he was travelling at a “high rate of speed.” Calgary had 29 fatal collisions last year, a 10-year high. So far this year, there have been 25 fatal collisions, including five fatal motorcycle crashes.
