A Calgary art gallery was host to another standout Stampede breakfast on Thursday. Contemporary Calgary’s annual event features pancakes and sausages, like most do, but also a special booth where visitors can get a pancake portrait. Calgary artist Eric Olson uses batter as a medium to create the edible works of art. Olson says when he started working with Contemporary Calgary on the pancake breakfast a few years ago, he would make pancake cowboys, but his friend pitched the idea of trying to make portraits of local characters in the community — and it was a huge success. “It’s a little bit of trial and error,” he said. “A lot of it comes from my experience as a print maker — in a way, it’s similar. “Everybody’s different, so each pancake is different.” The free pancake breakfast was held at the art gallery’s front plaza from 9-11 a.m. and featured live music and line dancing.
