Plans have been unveiled for a new recreation centre and library in the Calgary community of West District. GEC Architecture has been chosen to design the proposed YMCA and Calgary Public Library location. GEC is the same group behind the Remington YMCA in Quarry Park and Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. “Working with GEC allows us to design and plan a space that will reflect community needs and support health, wellness and connection in Calgary’s growing west end,” said Shannon Doram, president and CEO of YMCA Calgary. The new facilities will be located on Broadcast Avenue S.W., on land donated by Truman Homes. “We’re excited to help create a place that reflects the unique character of West District and supports the everyday moments that make communities,” said Andrew Tankard with GEC. “The best spaces are shaped by the people who use them, and we’re looking forward to listening, learning and designing alongside our partners and the community.” The project is still in the early stages, but the goal is to have it built by early 2030. Officials say construction will depend on funding from all three levels of government, along with philanthropic partners.
