In two years, hundreds of Calgarians will be moving into the largest affordable development Calgary Housing has ever seen. The company on Thursday broke ground on a multi-phase development in Southview that is being touted as “a major milestone” in Calgary Housing’s role as a home builder. “These homes will help address the housing need that has grown in the city in recent years and is a wonderful example of the Government of Alberta’s Stronger Foundations affordable housing strategy in action,” said Bo Jiang, Calgary Housing’s interim president and CEO, in a news release. The first phase is a mid-rise development featuring 250 homes in a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units. Ten per cent of those will be accessible for residents with disabilities. The City of Calgary provided $31.2 million for the construction, while the provincial and federal governments also provided investments. “Every Calgarian deserves the dignity of a safe place to call home. That why breaking ground on phase one of this major affordable housing development is an important step for Calgary,” said Mayor Jeromy Farkas. “It is critical that we celebrate when all governments work together to address affordability challenges for Calgarians living on lower incomes.” Employment and entrepreneurship opportunities are also available at the location with live-work units and co-working spaces. Other amenities include a lounge, rooftop patio, secure bike storage and landscaped surroundings. Rents will be offered in a wide range in “a perpetually sustainable operating funding model.” “Rents just below market rates help to fund more deeply affordable rents and fund maintenance costs, eliminating the need for operating funding from governments,” officials said. Phase 1 of construction is expected be completed in the first quarter of 2028. Phase 2 is still being planned.
