Lethbridge will soon have a new residential development in the city’s north end. It will bring 115 new housing units to the rental market and sit next door to MyCityCare’s Lethbridge office. “The rate is rising as far as rental availability within our city. But it’s still a very, very big need in our city to be able to make a small dent in that is very meaningful,” said MyCityCare founder and CEO Kelly Stickel. MyCityCare approached the City of Lethbridge asking what the city’s biggest needs are. The city pointed to housing, which was when MyCityCare got to work to make a new development a reality. “It’s tough for (the) city to do on the backing of taxpayers. They brought a lot of donations. They’re able to get a lot of outside grants and with work with the city to be able to help stretch that dollar,” said Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen. Projects like these help ensure the city can keep growing. A lack of safe and affordable housing can deter new professionals from moving to Lethbridge. “Young families can move here and develop their family, develop their skills, develop work in the economy. But we also need that housing for seniors that are also still contributing to the economy,” said Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce CEO Cyndi Crane. The total cost of the project will range between $50 and $60 million. MyCityCare is funding it through private donations and loans. Donations will help to offset the cost of living for the residents who move in. “(We’re) very passionate about being able to not have just the community come to us, but us go to the community and meet the needs in our city and identify what those needs are,” Stickel said. “Housing is one of the major needs in Lethbridge. And we’re very proud to be able to have the expertise within our congregation to be able to take this on,” Stickel said. The first 28 units are expected to be completed by summer of 2027.
