Around 500 Calgarians gathered at the Ampersand Saturday night to celebrate and raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes. The Motionball Gala started as a way to encourage young professionals to give back to their community. Special Olympians also attended to share their accomplishments. All the proceeds go directly to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation to ensure teams across the country can buy uniforms and equipment and cover travel costs to tournaments. Organizers said being part of the Special Olympics program was eye opening. “Motionball is a national charity,” said gala board member Heather Leahey. “It’s been around for over 20 years and raises money for the Special Olympics. It does so through community events, social and sporting events, and I think what makes it unique is that it integrates people from the community with Special Olympics athletes, which is a really rewarding experience for everybody.” The evening included musical performances by Garrett Barbuto and the Hot Pursuit, the Frontiers, and others. There was also a silent auction. Organizers hoped to raise around $50,000. The 2025 Motionball Gala raised $62,000. About 70 per cent of the money raised will go to Special Olympics Alberta.
