Motion to halt bike lane construction rejected by council

A rally over bike lanes centres on provincial legislation expected this fall that would give the province more say, a move advocates argue could force cities to remove existing routes at taxpayer expense while limiting new ones.

A motion to pause construction of bike lanes in Calgary has skidded to a stop.

Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean had asked the city to halt all current on-street bike lane projects.

The motion came ahead of an expected bill from the Alberta government that would see new rules and oversight on municipal bike lane projects.

The motion was defeated 10-5 on Tuesday evening by council.
