The Medicine Hat Police Service’s downtown patrol unit recently received provincial recognition for its work. Members from the unit were on hand to receive an Alberta Community Justice Award late last week in the category of “responding to and preventing crime and violence.” “The Medicine Hat Police Service downtown patrol unit demonstrates a community-focused approach to crime prevention and public safety in Medicine Hat’s downtown core,” the province said in its literature for the event. “The unit has strengthened community trust, supported vulnerable individuals and enhanced safety and resilience for residents, businesses and visitors alike.” The unit was formed six years ago. The Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce nominated the unit for the award. And that made the award “especially meaningful,” the service said, “because the unit was nominated by the local business community.” Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis said of all winners that the recognition is deeply deserved. “The successes we celebrate today demonstrate what is possible when individuals, teams and organizations work together toward a common goal,” he said. Justice Minister and Attorney General Mickey Amery thanked all winners for their dedication. “The recipients recognized today demonstrate that meaningful change often begins at the community level, where practical solutions, compassion and commitment can have a lasting impact on people’s lives,” he said. The awards were given out on Oct. 2 in Lethbridge.
