Official results for the Calgary-Shaw byelection confirm the NDP’s Kyle Campbell as the winner, snatching the longtime conservative stronghold from the UCP. Released by Elections Alberta on Thursday, the results show Campbell received 7,464 votes while UCP candidate Mike Derry received 6,873. Progressive Tory Party of Canada candidate Kyle Joseph came in third place with 977 votes, while Alberta Liberal Party candidate John Roggeveen received 602. Independent candidate Rolly Ashdown finished last with 82 votes. The byelection was called after former UCP cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz resigned in May, and comes as Albertans prepare to vote in an Oct. 19 referendum. Elections Alberta says voter turnout for the byelection was 35.9 per cent with 15,998 votes cast out of 45,680 eligible electors. In comparison, 25,000 total votes were cast in Calgary-Shaw in the 2023 general election, 63.3 per cent of the 39,464 eligible voters. More than half of the voters in the Calgary-Shaw byelection voted in person (53.19 per cent), while 43.44 per cent voted in advance polls.
