What started as a petition about pedestrian safety has turned into a fully complete pathway in Coaldale, Alta. Christian Gammel started a petition to town council about the safety of those accessing Rehoboth Christian Ministries’ garden centre along Highway 845. He says people would have to walk along the side of the highway in order to visit the centre, with some staff and clients having mobility challenges. Gammel asked the town to pave a pathway to help improve safety and on Wednesday, the pathway officially opened to the public. “It makes us feel a lot safer and that we won’t be having traffic racing past us and not slowing down and people possibly being injured because of safety reasons,” said Gammel. “When Christian brought forward his petition to myself, I presented it to our council and our administration, and it was a no-brainer. It was a great idea that should’ve been done a long time ago,” said Jack Van Rijn, Coaldale’s mayor. The 400-metre path connects to a path along 16th Avenue with future plans to connect to the Link Pathway on the west side of town.
