The 2026 Calgary Youth Science Fair is underway at the University of Calgary. More than 900 students from Grades 5 to 12 are taking part in the event at the Olympic Oval, which is billed as Canada’s largest gathering of young scientists. “It’s a day full of science and discovery and sharing of knowledge,” said spokesperson Grant Mansiere. Projects will be reviewed by more than 500 volunteer judges, all of whom work in STEM. “These are oil and gas professionals, these are tech professionals … These are folks who live and breathe STEM and are passionate about it,” Mansiere said. The youth are competing for awards and a spot in the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Edmonton next month. Grade 6 student Noah Meyerson and his partner had a project exploring what home-made water filters are most efficient. “We’re just seeing what materials clean water the best out of sand, activated charcoal and rocks,” he explained. “Canada’s very privileged to have clean water. Some other countries don’t have clean water, so this is a great example to show how to clean your water.” “I just love learning about new stuff!” he said. Public viewing will be held starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, followed by award presentations from noon to 1:30 p.m. The science fair has been held for more than 60 years. This year marks its 14th year at the Olympic Oval.
