A group of students from the University of Calgary spent Bermuda Shorts Day (BSD) offering a hand in the construction of a house for Habitat for Humanity. The event, organized by the Students’ Union, gave students celebrating the end of the school year an alternative to the traditional on-campus party consisting of live music and beer gardens. Forty four students took part in Tuesday’s community service-learning pilot project, assisting with the building of a home in the northwest community of Evanston. Organizers say the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s neat to see U of C students coming together,” says Erin Kaipainen, a member of the Students’ Union. “We wanted to capture some of that energy and have them coming together for a good cause." "I've been to quite a few BSD’s already in the past four years,” says Megan Kuiper. “I thought it was a good opportunity to do something different." Thousands of U of C students took part in Tuesday's traditional BSD festivities on campus, seizing the opportunity to let loose after a long semester of school.
