Immigration officers found four undocumented workers after searching the construction site for Calgary’s new event centre, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The CBSA inspected the team working on the event centre on Wednesday after receiving a tip about the worksite. “CBSA officers exercised their designated peace officer authorities by conducting ID checks for the purpose of administering and enforcing (the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act), namely to identify persons of potential interest for non-compliance,” a CBSA spokesperson told CTV News on Thursday evening. Because it’s a large site, immigration officers asked the Calgary Police Service to be there as an extra security measure. The four individuals found without status are required to report to the CBSA office this week. The investigation is ongoing. “When the Canada Border Services Agency becomes aware of situations where there are possible violations of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, we investigate and take the appropriate action as mandated by Canadian law,” the CBSA spokesperson said. “Ensuring that those who are inadmissible leave the country is critical to the integrity of Canada’s immigration system.”
