An annual event that helps newcomers to Canada in Calgary took on new meaning this year. The Immigrant Education Society held a gathering for parents of children with disabilities on Thursday. Representatives from several organizations provided information on autism and disability supports. Organizers say the gathering holds a special place in their hearts -- especially because of the recent disappearance and death of Parker Wells. The 11-year-old was non-verbal and autistic and wandered away from his day home. “It hit me very personally because I also have a child (who) happens to be 10 years old,” said Noha el Tanahi of the Immigration Education Society. “However, he is high function, but I know if he lost his way, I know that he won’t speak to strangers. “So I know how tough, how hard that is,” she added. “And I’m not the only one because part of our job we deal with parents with kids with disability every day.” Organizers hope this event helps newcomers learn which resources they qualify for and how to access them.
