Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf came up just short of being named the NHL’s top rookie. The NHL announced the results of the 2025 Calder Trophy voting on Tuesday, with Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lane Hutson taking home the award. Hutson received 1832 points from 165 first-place votes and 26 second-place votes. Wolf came in second place with 1169 points from 15 first-place votes, 96 second-place votes, 59 third-place votes, 17 fourth-place votes and one fifth-place vote. Macklin Celebrini, a San Jose Sharks forward and the first-overall pick in the 2024 draft, finished third, while Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov and Anaheim’s Cutter Gauthier rounded out the top five. Wolf started 53 games for the Flames in his first full NHL season, winning 29 while sporting a 2.64 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage. A seventh-round pick in 2019, Wolf worked his way up to the NHL while excelling in the WHL and AHL, winning the CHL’s goaltender of the year award in 2020 and the AHL’s outstanding goaltender award in both 2022 and 2023. Hutson, meanwhile, led all rookies with 60 assists and 66 points over the course of the 2024-25 season. He was just the fourth defenceman in the NHL’s modern era to lead rookies in scoring.
