It was a clever way to get a very important health message out—the Cineplex in Calgary’s University District was the backdrop on Thursday night for the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s “Double Screening” event. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Before guests enjoyed a screening of the 2004 flick The Notebook, they heard from speakers on the importance of promoting early detection through regular breast screening. “One in eight Albertan women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and that’s a very hard fact,” said Mariko Macken with the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “And so we wanted to create awareness by creating a fun campaign. “It’s cheeky, referencing ’90s nostalgia movies and trivia. It’s something people will resonate with and something that we hope people will take and talk about.” In Alberta, it’s recommended women at average risk for breast cancer book regular mammograms every two years starting at age 45.
