‘Community-centred’ Sport Hub program launched by City of Calgary

Calgary’s mayor and others are lauding the launch of a new “community-centred” program called Sport Hub.

According to the city, Sport Hub is “designed to reduce common barriers to sport participation, including cost, equipment, transportation and limited opportunities to try different activities.”

In a release issued Monday, the city said it will work with partners to ensure Sport Hub works.

Those partners will include local sports organizations, and the United Way of Calgary and Area.

The city says the goal for the program in its first year is “to reach more than 45 Calgary communities and 90 schools.”

Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the program “reflects our commitment to inclusion, collaboration and community well-being.”

“By working together, we’re creating meaningful opportunities for young Calgarians to stay active, build confidence and feel a sense of belonging in their communities,” he said.

Sport Hub is part of the city’s long‑term recreation strategy, GamePlan.

Ian Fleming, director of recreation and social programs, says it “is expanding access to quality sport experiences, reducing barriers and supporting the physical, social and emotional well‑being of young Calgarians.”

Sport Hub also ties into the United Way of Calgary and Area’s Planet Youth initiative.

Karen Young, local United Way president and CEO, says connection and inclusion “can change the trajectory” of young people’s lives.

Young says Planet Youth supports “opportunities like Sport Hub so more youth can build confidence, find belonging and stay connected to their communities.”
