A two-year-old child has died after they were struck by a vehicle in a northeast Calgary parking lot. It happened around 5:39 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot near the Winner’s store at Sunridge Mall in the 2500 block of 36 Street N.E. The Calgary Police Service (CPS) said the child was hit after they ran away from their father. The child was taken to the Peter Lougheed Centre, but later died. Andy Woodward of the CPS traffic unit calls the situation “an unfortunate set of circumstances.” “The message I will send out to everybody is that parking lots can be dangerous areas. We’re just coming up to the holiday season, we’re not far off it (and) kids do get really excited this time of year and my advice to any parent is to make sure you’ve securely got your child in your hands.” Police say the driver remained on scene and the traffic section is investigating. “It does take its toll on our guys to come to these kinds of collisions, whether it be a two-year-old or whether it be a 92-year-old, you know it still affects our guys, it still affects any emergency services first responder in this kind of accident,” Woodward said. The victim’s identity has not been released.
