Cavalry FC reclaimed first place Saturday, defeating Vancouver FC 1-0 at ATCO Field. The win extended Cavalry’s winning streak to six, with five of them victories. The win pushed Cavalry over Forge FC into first place as the two clubs continue to battle for the CPL Shield, given to the team with the most regular season points. Vancouver lost its third straight, but continue to hold the fourth and final playoff spot by five points. Late in the first half, Tobias Warschewski floated a ball into heavy traffic in the penalty area, where it found Bradley Kamden-Fewo, who headed it in to put Cavalry up 1-0. Vancouver pushed back in the second half, but weren’t able to penetrate deep into Cavalry territory owing to solid defensive play. Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. said after the game that his club is performing efficiently at the best time of the season. “It’s massive,” Wheeldon said. “I said this after we beat Supra in a very close game, 2-1, last-minute – when we took a point away from Supra: those points matter in the long run, so it doesn’t matter how you do it, it matters when you do it. " I’ve been fortunate to sit in front of you (lately) and say, our tactic was the reason why we won it. Today, it was our defence." Next up for Cavalry FC is a Labour Day game in Halifax against the Wanderers.
