Some Calgary races awaiting results as Conservatives claim most southern Alberta seats on election night

CTV News has declared Mark Carney’s Liberals have won enough seats in the federal election to form a minority government.

After the dust of the initial poll results rush settled, all but three Calgary ridings were declared wins for the Conservative Party.

Every other southern Alberta riding was also Conservative blue.

The winners of Calgary Confederation, Calgary McKnight and Calgary Skyview were not declared on election night.

12 a.m. MDT: Three races up in the air

Votes are being counted late into the night to determine three Calgary election races.

A winner has not yet been declared in Calgary Confederation, Calgary McKnight and Calgary Skyview, as of midnight.

Liberal candidate Corey Hogan led Calgary Confederation, while Conservatives Dalwinder Gill and Amanpreet Gill led Calgary McKnight and Calgary Skyview, respectively.

In Calgary and southern Alberta, declarations had been made for Conservative candidates in the following ridings at the time of this writing:

ANALYSIS: How will Danielle Smith interact with new Liberal government?

An Alberta political scientist said he’s interested to see how Alberta’s United Conservative government interacts with the new Liberal government.

Trevor Harrison, professor emeritus of political sociology at the University of Lethbridge, notes Premier Danielle Smith was laying out demands to whomever won before the election even occurred.

“This is not exactly a handshake way of engaging with a new government,” he said.

“(It’s) part of the DNA of the UCP, but it also runs long in Alberta politics, is you run against Ottawa, and particularly you run against Liberal governments.”

11:42 p.m. Calgary Conservatives, Liberals react to results

Calgary Centre Conservative candidate Greg McLean spoke with reporters after he was elected for another term.

McLean said despite the Liberal party forming government, dealing with a minority government is “better” than a Liberal majority.

“Take a look at the number of seats we’ve increased by, it looks like about over 30 seats right now,” McLean said.

“I’m pretty pleased with that result, we’re getting more and more representation across Canada and that’s important for the growth of our party and for the growth of our message across Canada about building a better Canada going forward.”

Incumbent George Chahal, the Liberal candidate for Calgary McKnight, spoke to supporters on Monday night, with his race still up in the air.

“Tonight, we are still waiting on the final results, and this election was much tighter than anticipated,” Chahal said.

“Once all the polls are in, I will make a formal statement.”

11 p.m. MDT: Conservatives claim Calgary Centre

After hours of back and forth between the Conservatives and the Liberals, the Tories took Calgary Centre.

The CTV News Decision Desk has declared Greg McLean will once again represent the riding in Ottawa.

McLean, who was first elected in 2019, defeated Liberal candidate Lindsay Luhnau.

10:53 p.m. MDT: Calgary riding to watch

Calgary Confederation appears to be one of the city’s most hotly contested races.

Conservative candidate Jeremy Nixon and Liberal candidate Corey Hogan have been neck and neck over the past hour, as the leader in the race has flipped back and forth multiple times as more results come in.

The seat was previously held by Conservative Len Webber, who chose not to run in this election.

Winners have also not yet been declared in Calgary McKnight and Calgary Skyview.

9:50 p.m. MDT: Conservatives now leading or elected in all Calgary ridings

Conservative candidates have been elected or are leading races in every single Calgary riding.

Liberal candidates in Calgary Confederation and Calgary Centre were leading for some time, but the Conservatives, Greg McLean in Centre and Jeremy Nixon in Confederation, have since taken the lead back.

9:30 p.m. MDT: Four Calgary races still close

Four ridings in Calgary are awaiting election calls, but they appear to be close races.

As of 9:30 p.m. MDT, Liberal candidates were leading in Calgary Centre and Calgary Confederation. Both would be gains for the Liberals, with the seats previously being held by the Conservatives.

In Calgary Centre, Liberal Lindsay Luhnau was leading Conservative incumbent Greg McLean.

Then in Confederation, Liberal Corey Hogan was leading Conservative Jeremy Nixon.

Confederation was previously held by Conservative Len Webber, who chose not to run in this election.

Two other races, Calgary Skyview and Calgary McKnight, were led by new Conservative candidates.

In Skyview, which just started reporting votes after 9 p.m., was led by Amanpreet Gill. Gill was ahead of Liberal Hafeez Malik.

McKnight was led by Conservative Dalwinder Gill, who was ahead of Liberal incumbent George Chahal.

9:08 p.m. MDT: Calgary East, Calgary Shepard stay Conservative blue

Calgary East is also a win for the Conservatives.

CTV News has declared the riding as going to Jasraj Hallan.

He was elected to Calgary Forest Lawn in 2019, and then Calgary East in 2021.

He also ran provincially for the UCP in 2019, losing in Calgary-McCall.

And shortly after, Calgary Shepard was also declared as going to the Conservatives.

Tom Kmiec takes that riding again, first elected in 2015 and having held it since.

8:55 p.m. MDT: Calgary Crowfoot seat goes to Conservatives

The Conservatives will come out on top in the riding of Calgary Crowfoot.

Pat Kelly has been declared the winner by CTV News.

He was previously the Conservative MP in the riding of Calgary Rocky Ridge, serving there for three terms from 2015 on.

8:48 p.m. MDT: Conservatives sweep outside of Calgary

The Conservatives have once again swept the southern Alberta ridings outside of the City of Calgary.

CTV News has declared wins for:

• Blake Richards in Airdrie-Cochrane;
• Blaine Calkins in Ponoka-Didsbury; and
• William Stevenson in Yellowhead.

The Conservatives also added one more seat in Calgary — David McKenzie has been elected in Calgary Signal Hill.

8:37 p.m. MDT: Conservative Shuv Majumdar takes Calgary Heritage

The CTV News Decision Desk has declared Conservative Shuv Majumdar has won Calgary Heritage.

Majumdar was originally elected to the seat in a 2023 byelection.

Heritage is the third Calgary riding of the night to be declared for the Conservatives.

8:26 p.m. MDT: One more Calgary Conservative elected

Another Calgary Conservative is returning to Parliament.

CTV News has declared Stephanie Kusie the victor in the riding of Calgary Midnapore.

Kusie is the incumbent in the seat, first elected in a 2017 byelection.

8:22 p.m. MDT: Six more southern Alberta ridings go blue

The Conservatives have won six more ridings in southern Alberta.

The CTV News Decision Desk has declared wins for:

• Damien Kurek in Battle River-Crowfoot;
• David Bexte in Bow River;
• John Barlow in Foothills;
• Rachael Thomas in Lethbridge;

8 p.m. MDT: Conservatives win Calgary Nose Hill

CTV News has declared Conservative Michelle Rempel Garner has been re-elected in Calgary Nose Hill.

Rempel Garner is the incumbent in the seat and was first elected in 2011.

7:45 p.m. MDT: Early results trickling in

Early results in some southern Alberta and Calgary ridings have started to come in.

7:30 p.m. MDT: Polls close in Alberta

The polls in Calgary and southern Alberta have closed.

Polls in the Mountain Time Zone were scheduled to close at 7:30 p.m.

Elections Canada workers can start counting ballots cast on Monday after polls close.

Due to high turnout during advance voting, counting of those ballots can begin two hours before polls close to help speed up the reporting of results, according to Elections Canada.

6:09 p.m. MDT: Elections Canada website issues

Elections Canada says some voters may be having issues accessing its website.

“To find your polling place, check your voter information card, contact your local Elections Canada office or call us at 1-800-463-6868,” Elections Canada said in a social media post on X.

The agency said it is investigating the issue.

ANALYSIS: Ridings to watch: ‘Four of them are in play’

Political analysts say Calgary Confederation, Calgary Centre, Calgary McKnight and Calgary Skyview are all ridings to watch.

According to Mount Royal University political scientist Duane Bratt, they are all up for grabs.

“I think four of them are in play. The Liberals have never won more than two seats in the city before, they have a chance at four,” said Bratt.
