Canada Border Services Agency seizes more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine in Alberta

Border officials say three drivers are facing charges after a series of busts involving trucks trying to cross into Canada laden with drugs.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said three commercial trucks were stopped at the Coutts, Alta., border crossing late last year.

In the first incident, on Nov. 26, 2025, officers were inspecting a truck loaded with electrolyte beverages destined for Calgary.

A further inspection with a dog team uncovered 461 kilograms of cocaine and 43 kilograms of suspected heroin, according to border officials.

Almost a week later, CBSA was inspecting a truck pulling an empty truck trailer on Dec. 2. A further examination found 300 kilograms of cocaine and 400 grams of suspected dode (opium poppies).

On Dec. 18, 2025, the CBSA detector dog was brought in to inspect a truck carrying a declared load of vacuum parts.

Officials soon found 206 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed inside the shipment.

The CBSA says all three drivers were arrested for smuggling.

“CBSA officers remain vigilant and dedicated to keeping harmful drugs off our streets,” said Janalee Bell-Boychuk, CBSA’s regional director general of the Prairie Region, in a news release.

“Alongside our RCMP law enforcement partners, we are keeping Canadians safe by securing our borders and disrupting crime.”

In 2025, CBSA officers in Alberta made 1,292 seizures of illegal narcotics, including 1,054 kilograms of cocaine and 279 kilograms of methamphetamine.

CBSA detector dog service teams carried out 29,486 searches, uncovering 13,986 high-risk food, plant and animal items.

They also made 34,810 seizures of drugs, firearms and currency.
