A popular Calgary festival that celebrates art, science and engineering won’t be held this year. Beakerhead first launched in 2013. The annual, multi-day STEM celebration is held every September. Officials with the Telus Spark science centre confirm the event is “on pause.” The science centre took over operations of Beakerhead in 2022. According to a statement on the Telus Spark website, the pause is to allow the facility to “consider how to bring Beakerhead once again to a growing and changing city.” Canadian author and broadcaster Jay Ingram, who co-founded Beakerhead, said it “erupted at a perfect time in Calgary’s growth as a city.” “We had an amazing CEO and start-up team that brought Calgary’s art, science and engineering to life across the city. It built a legacy that endures. “Telus Spark took over the responsibility to maintain that momentum. I can’t speak to the board’s decisions since then. Maybe a consortium of Calgary organizations could bring Beakerhead back to life.”
