Calgary weather: Warmer and drier weather for most of the next week

After days of rain and cooler temperatures, central and southern Alberta can expect some sunshine and a return to more seasonal values.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada portions of Alberta recorded over 130 millimetres of rain from Saturday, May 30 to Tuesday, June 2, 2026 (up to 9 a.m. MDT).

The City of Calgary saw totals between 70 to 110 millimetres, Lethbridge 99 millimetres, Medicine Hat 66 millimetres.

Areas like Bow Valley recorded 93 millimetres and higher elevation locations between Banff and Kananaskis (above 2,000 metres) measured between 10 to 15 centimetres of heavy, wet, snow.

That snow proved to be helpful and alleviated some of the strain on local waterways since the rate of snow melt was slowed down.

There are still several high streamflow advisories across central and southern Alberta as well as a flood watch for the Bow River near Lake Louise due to additional water volume and fast flow rates.

Stream banks should be navigated with caution due to erosion and slippery conditions.

The warmer temperatures and sunshine over the next week will help with local water pooling.

Fog is possible in the mornings as the saturated ground will add additional moisture to the atmosphere during the typical overnight evaporative processes.

The main weather maker for this recent event was a blocking pattern in the upper atmosphere that left a low-pressure system hovering over the southern border between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

We are already seeing a return to the more typical west-to-east pattern for southern Alberta, and this will continue for at least the next week.

There is a chance of brief disturbances on Thursday and again Saturday.

Both days could include scattered showers and/or thunderstorms in the Calgary area, but if that does develop – accumulations should be minimal.
