The main weather maker for the region is a ridge of high pressure situated over the Rockies that is anchored by low-pressure systems to the east and west. The opposing rotations (clockwise rotation around the high and counterclockwise rotation around the lows) will hold that ridge in place and produce persistently stable weather conditions underneath it. As a result, there will be little to no cloud cover in Calgary for the next few days, and daytime highs will hover around 30 C by the middle of this week. During the summer, daytime heating can initiate active weather or cause thunderstorms to develop when there is atmospheric instability – but under a stable weather pattern like this, that threat does not exist. The proximity of the Rocky Mountains to this current ridge does introduce the potential for thunderstorm development along the foothills west of Calgary later in the day Tuesday, and wildfire smoke may decrease air quality in southern Alberta by the afternoon. Overnight temperatures will range from 12 C to 14 C for the next few nights. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible in southern British Columbia on Thursday and into central Alberta by Thursday night. The next chance of rain in Calgary will be Saturday and coincide with a larger pattern change and a moderation of temperatures.
