Police in Calgary say members of the South Asian community are being extorted by criminals identifying themselves as members of a terrorist organization. Officials say since July 2025, there have been 12 reported extortion attempts. Nine of the incidents have involved firearms, where homes, businesses and vehicles were shot. No injuries have been reported. “Victims have received threats via WhatsApp and international calls, often accompanied by threats of violent acts or videos,” police said in a social media post Monday. Officials say the offenders have used the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in their threats, a group that was recently identified as a terrorist group in Canada. Police say they are actively investigating these incidents and are being supported by other law enforcement agencies, such as the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams. Calgary police say patrols are also in place to deter further crimes. “Public safety is our top priority. We will continue to engage with the community, share updates and work to hold those responsible accountable.”
