Calgary police are asking for public assistance to help identify a suspect in connection with a bank fraud scheme. On Wednesday at around 5:38 p.m., a victim got a phone call that said it was a phone call from a number identified as a Bank of Montreal (BMO) branch. The caller identified themselves as a BMO fraud investigator and told the victim their debit card and credit cards had been compromised. The caller had detailed information about the victim, including their full name, address and date of birth. Based on this, the victim gave the caller her banking ID number, cut up her debit and credit cards and waited for a courier to collect them. At around 6 p.m., police say a person driving a grey Chevrolet SUV picked up the cards. A little over two hours later, the victim received a phone call from BMO security about a $12,500 transaction at the Ace Casino, at 4040 Blackfoot Trail S.E. The victim, realizing she had been scammed, called BMO and canceled her credit cards. The suspect is described as a man in his mid-20s, about 5′9″ tall, weighing around 160 pounds. He had short black hair and a black beard. He was last seen wearing glasses, a long grey overcoat and black pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234.
