A partnership between the City of Calgary and two non-profit groups will see volunteers planting 1,400 new trees in a northeast park. Trees for Life, along with the Arbour Day Foundation, is working with the city for the second-straight year on an initiative to expand Calgary’s urban canopy, this time in Winston Heights Park. The plan will see volunteers plant approximately 1,400 new trees in the space. “Contributing to the city’s goal to expand the urban canopy to 16 per cent (currently 9.62 per cent), the trees will support building healthier and more resilient neighbourhoods,” officials said in a Thursday news release. “The new trees will support biodiversity, expand wildlife habitats, filter pollutants from the air, and help mitigate the urban heat island effect, offering cooling shade in the summer months.” The project is among others from Trees for Life and the Arbour Day Foundation, which led plantings in Richmond, B.C., and Toronto. Another project is scheduled in Edmonton later this year. In 2025, the planting initiative saw 2,000 new trees added to West Nose Creek Park.
